Beach & Bikini Photoshoot
Sun’s Out, Buns Out In Chiba
On a balmy afternoon in late June, the picturesque coastal town of Onjuku in Chiba Prefecture set the stage for a special photography weekend. I teamed up with my longtime friend and make-up artist, Misaki Hara, to create a collaborative beach photoshoot experience, offering a small group of participants the opportunity to receive professional-quality images. The event attracted five enthusiastic women ranging in age from their 20s to 50s, each bringing their own personality and level of experience for a memorable weekend of sun, sand, and creativity.

On a steamy hot weekend in late June, I had the pleasure of bringing together a fantastic group of women in the beautiful coastal town of Onjuku, Chiba, for our Summer “Kick-Off” Photoshoot. This special event was a collaboration between Shogunmaster Photography (Jeffrey Johnston) and professional make-up artist Misaki Hara, giving a select group of participants the opportunity to enjoy a professionally produced beach photoshoot experience while creating stunning new images for their portfolios and social media.

Interest in the event was strong from the very beginning. Nearly half of the available spots were filled during the initial casting phase before the event was even announced publicly. After opening applications on social media, the remaining spaces were quickly claimed within just a few days. In the end, five enthusiastic women ranging from their 20s to 50s joined us, bringing a wonderful mix of experience levels, personalities, and energy to the weekend.
One of the biggest attractions was our planned sunrise finale on the final morning. Knowing we had a professional make-up artist on location allowed us to create a fully supported experience, with everyone starting their day before dawn to prepare for the shoot. The early wake-up call was more than worth it for the incredible light and atmosphere that awaited us on the beach.
A major highlight of the event was the opportunity for participants to model a variety of swimwear styles, including micro bikinis for those who wanted to embrace a more daring and fashion-forward look. More than half of the group chose to take part in these sessions, creating bold and eye-catching images that combined confidence, creativity, and beachside glamour.
As the organizer and lead photographer behind Shogunmaster Photography, I always strive to create events that are both professionally run and genuinely enjoyable. Seeing five amazing women come together, support one another, and confidently step in front of the camera made this year’s event especially rewarding. The vibrant swimwear, stunning coastal scenery, and positive atmosphere all came together to create something memorable.
Throughout the weekend, the beach became our creative playground. Working alongside a second photographer with extensive experience in fashion and motorsports photography, we focused on capturing every detail, from candid moments and natural expressions to carefully composed portraits that made the most of Onjuku’s beautiful coastline.
A huge part of the event’s success was thanks to Misaki Hara, whose talent, professionalism, and attention to detail elevated every session. Having collaborated together on previous projects, I knew she would bring both creativity and positive energy to the production. Her ability to help participants feel relaxed and confident in front of the camera was invaluable, and her work played a major role in the quality of the final images.
The Summer “Kick-Off” Photoshoot, aptly titled “Sun’s Out, Buns Out,” concluded with our much-anticipated sunrise session. Long before dawn, our team was already preparing for the final shoot of the weekend. Hair and make-up were completed while the rest of the world slept, ensuring everyone was ready to step onto the beach as the first light appeared over the horizon.
As the sun rose over Onjuku, we made the most of every minute of that beautiful golden light. One by one, each participant took their turn posing along the shoreline, creating some of the most memorable images of the entire weekend. Watching everyone enjoy the experience and seeing their confidence grow throughout the event was incredibly satisfying.
Looking back, the event was about much more than swimwear or photography. It was about creativity, collaboration, and providing an environment where people could challenge themselves, try something new, and leave with both great memories and images they could be proud of. The success of the weekend reinforced why I enjoy organizing these events and has me excited to begin planning the next one -> looking at a Yacht “Formal” evening party (stay tuned)
